Raclette owes its name to the French term racler, which means to scrape or rather "to peel off " (but also "scratch"). Therefore this cheese is inextricably linked to the way it is consumed: after being heated, the half wheel of Raclette is scraped from the cut side, so that it can be enjoyed completely melted.
